The  Donatello Lobby

Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi, called Donatello by his friends, is considered one of the greatest sculptors of Renaissance Florence, a master of both marble and bronze. The Club Donatello logo is the winged Lion of St. Mark, the symbol of Venice. As you might suspect, therefore, the northern Italian ambiance of the Club owes its inspiration to the artist and his native Tuscany and to the region of Friuli-Venetia Giulia.

In the Lobby and Guest Reception area there are four types of Italian marble:

bullet

Botanico, a subtle beige marble with delicate veining is on the walls;

bullet

Red Verona, a dramatic and classic marble design is on the floors;

bullet

Michelangelo White, quarried from the same place that Michelangelo selected marble for his statue of David, is used to border the Red Verona tiles on the floors;

bullet

 Napoleon, a boulder-grained beige marble is used for the Guest Reception counter.

All of the marble comes from Forte di Marmi, Italy and was personally selected by Mr. Delfino, the designer of much of the Club Donatello and the Hotel Donatello interior style and features.

Entering from the Mason Street side, the large glass-enclosed tapestry on the left-hand wall, is Belgian, from the late 17th century. The two appliqués on either side of the Belgian tapestry are French First Empire in bronze.

The tall secretary furniture piece is late 18th century Austrian in Apple wood. The two chairs on either side are late 18th century Italian.

Salviati created the hand-made, mouth-blown recess glass panels reflecting light in the Lobby area and these can be especially noted in the Alcove and Guest Reception ceiling areas.  Antonio Salviati started his glassworks in 1859 in Murano. Today Salviati remains one of the most exclusive glassmakers in Venice.

On the walls of the Guest Reception area are four original lithographs, dated 1980, produced by artist Ellsworth Kelly (b. 1923 - ), American minimalist painter and sculptor. They are hand-printed on 300 gram Arches Cover paper. The lithographs are:

 Daffodil                 39-3/4" x 28-1/3"

Sarsaparilla         31-3/4" x 47-3/4"

 Mulberry Leaf     36-1/2" x 26-1/2"

Wild Grape Leaf, 27-1/2" x 24-3/4"

Some of Ellsworth Kelly's works can be seen at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and other fine art museums and galleries around the world.

The Ristorante Zingari and cocktail bar are on the mezzanine level overlooking the lobby.
